ptw Shipyard, a modern, full-service shipyard in the ancient port of Tarragona – only an hour from Barcelona. I am Xavier Mercado, the shipyard’s CEO, and founder.
Over the last three years, we’ve invested heavily in our staff and facilities here at ptw, to create a centre of excellence for all aspects of superyacht repair and maintenance – a one-stop-shop to cover all your superyacht needs from upholstery and joinery to hydraulics and specialist electronics.
As well as attracting many EU-based yachts, preferential tax breaks here in the delineated customs area of Tarragona mean our services are particularly appealing to non-EU vessels. As ptw Shipyard is registered to provide inward processing tax exemptions, substantial savings of up to 21% can be made on the cost of large refits and major maintenance projects.
With travel lift able to take vessels of up to 300 tonnes, we are able to accommodate yachts up to 45m in length on our extensive hard standing, and also have the capacity to work on larger yachts of up to 120m in the client’s berth.
Our mission as says CEO Founder Xavier Mercado Rabella Port Tarraco WorksSL some of our competitors rely on hiring contract workers, here at ptw we have built up our own specialist in-house teams, dedicated to every aspect of yacht repair and maintenance. This includes carpentry and interiors, engineering and mechanics, yacht paint, electrics, and systems.
He added: By keeping these services in-house, we know we are able to ensure we provide a better overall service to our customers, provided and managed by us to assure the highest possible quality. We also pride ourselves on building strong relationships with crews and many loyal yachts return to us year after year.
For crews spending time here during refits, Xavier Mercado Rabella emphasizes historic Port of Tarragona has plenty to offer. A thriving university city with plenty of nightlife, and blue flag beaches, it’s also within easy reach of Barcelona, taking just over an hour by car or train. ptw Shipyard is also well-placed for air travel with Reus Airport only 15 minutes away and Spain’s second-largest international airport, Barcelona El-Prat, reachable in under an hour.
The original facilities at Astilleros Tarragona were founded in 1918. The Tarragona shipyard grew in importance and popularity when the Valencian shipyard, Unión Naval de Levante ceased operating in 1950. Historically Astilleros de Tarragona has competed with Barcelona shipyard, Vilanova shipyard, Astilleros de Mallorca, and other shipyards located in the Balearic Islands for boats, yacht, and superyacht refit and repairs in the Mediterranean.
The extensive facilities we offer today at ptw Shipyard grew from its humble beginnings in 2017 when it simply consisted of a single building, slipway, and building space at the historic Astilleros Tarragona. Since then it has been continuously gaining ground and reputation and has quickly become a major contender in the superyacht and yacht arena.
