WMU : Class of 2022 – China Graduations

Graduation ceremonies were held on 25 and 26 August for the MSc programmes Shanghai and Dalian respectively. A total of 63 students graduated from the World Maritime University’s (WMU) MSc programmes offered in China. Since they were founded in 2005, a total of 1,165 students have graduated from the two programmes.

Dr. Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry, President of WMU, delivered remarks for the graduation ceremonies. She emphasized WMU’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the important role the graduates will play as maritime leaders who support achieving the UNSDGs.

“We are confident that the values that WMU graduates embody contribute in a significant way to achieve safe, secure, efficient, and environmentally sustainable marine transport and operations worldwide – which are fundamental objectives of the IMO and its member States.

You are now joining the elite family of WMU graduates, and it is your responsibility to assume the leadership as a maritime professional that this role brings,” she said.
ITL Class of 2022 Graduation, Shanghai

The 2022 graduation ceremony of WMU’s MSc in International Transport and Logistics (Shipping & Finance) (ITL) took place in Shanghai, China on 25 August. In total there were 22 graduates, all from China. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the ceremony was held via video conferencing.

Dr Shi Xin, Vice President of Shanghai Maritime University (SMU), delivered a message congratulating the graduates on their achievement and encouraging them to make good use of the knowledge acquired through their degree to meet the challenges encountered by the shipping industry. Vice President (International) of WMU, Professor Ruan Wei, the Director of SMU’s International Office, Prof. Chen Gang of WMU also participated in the ceremony as well as members of the SMU Faculty involved in the delivery of the ITL programme.

Mr Sun Haoyi made a speech on behalf of the Class, thanking both WMU and SMU, and the Faculty and the Staff for the excellent delivery of the programme. Mr Liang Qin received the Chancellor’s Medal for Academic Excellence.

The ITL programme commenced in 2005 and is offered in cooperation with Shanghai Maritime University. To date, there are 529 graduates from the programme. MSEM Class of 2022 Graduation, Dalian

The 2022 graduation ceremony of WMU’s MSc in Maritime Safety and Environmental Management (MSEM) took place in Dalian, China on 26 August. In total there were 41 graduates, all from China. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the ceremony was held with a hybrid online and in-person delivery.

Dr Zhao Youtao, Vice President of Dalian Maritime University (DMU), delivered a speech and congratulated the graduates on their achievements. He encouraged the graduates to apply the knowledge they had gained through their studies to promote safer, cleaner and more sustainable shipping. Professor Shuo Ma,

Vice President (International) of WMU, participated in the ceremony. Prof. Chen Gang from WMU and DMU Faculty involved in the MSEM programme, and the professors and administrative Staff of DMU’s College of International Cooperation also participated in the ceremony, including the Dean, Professor Zhang Jinlei, Mr Shao Guang and Professor Zhao Jian. Some family members of the graduates were also in attendance.

Ms Shen Yu received the Chancellor’s Medal for Academic Excellence. Ms Shen Yu and Mr Chen Qianrong received DMU’s Best Dissertations Prize. The MSEM Spirit Award was awarded to Mr Zhang Qingbao. Mr Zhang Qingbao delivered a speech on behalf of the MSEM-2022 Class and Mr. Wei Shiwei spoke on behalf of the MSEM-2023 Class.

The MSEM programme commenced in 2005 and is offered in cooperation with Dalian Maritime University. To date, 636 graduates have completed the MSEM programme.
