!?Why Shipping Matters

Amver, Saving Lives at Sea Since 1958

For most of us school ended with children at home, collaborating online, perhaps struggling with online lessons, and wondering when the next package would arrive.  Many parents struggled with at-home schooling. Many families and students struggled with video learning. Thankfully, our friends at the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers developed a way for students to learn about shipping. Why Shipping Matters is a perfect program to complement in-school or at-home learning. These lessons can also be adapted for Scouts!

Why do we need to teach our children about shipping? First, we’ve become increasingly aware of the importance of shipping as we’ve been locked away at home. Everything from the device we’re reading this on to the bananas in our morning cereal has likely arrived by ship. Secondly, shipping lessons are life, history, math, and science lessons. “Shipping is integral to every aspect of our daily lives,” says Julie Lithgow, Director of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers. “Everyday school and home lessons can easily be tied in to lesson on shipping. The parallels are incredible!” she added.

The parallels are seemingly everywhere. Anything from geography to physical education has a maritime equivalent. Physical education? Really? Yes, try the semaphore alphabet and tell us you didn’t burn some calories!

Amver is proud to support this endeavor and encourage teachers and families to explore the lessons on the Why Shipping Matters page.
