Equipment Demurrage and Equipment Detention:
In an effort to provide flexibility and transparency on managing Equipment Demurrage and Equipment Detention during COVID-19, Hamburg Süd will follow the below guidelines:
- Any day a terminal is closed, Hamburg Süd will not count that day as a working day within the customer’s free time period for equipment demurrage or equipment detention.
- If a terminal is restricting empty returns, Hamburg Süd will not count that day as a working day within the free time period for import equipment detention.
- For export detention, if the earliest receipt date changes for a shipment (while the container is in the customer’s possession for stuffing), Hamburg Süd will extend the customer’s detention free time through the new earliest receipt date for the shipment.
- In all cases of the above, when free time expires – Hamburg Süd will bill equipment demurrage and equipment detention per normal procedure.
- Any 3rd party expenses (chassis, storage depots, etc.) due to changes of terminal or vessel schedules will not be covered by Hamburg Süd.

| Canada | Canadian National (CN) Malport Rail Changes- Due to reduced volumes, effective April 20, 2020 – All traffic destined to NY/NJ/Philadelphia and to Prince George/Prince Rupert will return to Brampton International Terminal (BIT), instead of Malport. Port of Montreal imports will continue to arrive at Malport. |
| New York | New York PNCT to MMR Delays- Delays continue to increase for rail cargo moving from PNCT to Millennium Marine Rail (MMR). This ongoing situation is being addressed with the Terminal directly to identify solutions for moving the cargo out quicker. |
| West Coast | Terminal Closures-Ongoing terminal closures due to low-volume have caused delays in picking up and delivering imports, picking up empties for bookings, and turning in exports once loaded. |
