Maersk establishes an integrated national network in Egypt for the production and distribution of green energy

Cooperation between SCA and Maersk especially in the training, exchange of experiences, maritime transport, logistics, container handling terminals, and marine services.

“President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi received today the Chairman of CEO of A.P. Moller – Maersk Søren Skou in the presence of ِAdmiral Osama Rabie, Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority, and Mr. Hani El-Nadi, the group’s representative in Egypt.”

The official spokesman for the Presidency of the Republic stated that the meeting dealt with joint cooperation with  A.P. Moller – Maersk to produce green energy and clean fuels for ships.

The President directed to start cooperating with  A.P. Moller – Maersk to establish an integrated national network in Egypt to produce and distribute green energy and clean fuel for ships,

Depending on new and renewable energy sources, in integration with the state’s efforts to transform green energy and preserve the environment, and in light of the series of modern ports that Egypt now enjoys it on the coasts of the Red and Mediterranean seas , in addition to the shipping lane of the Suez Canal, which is the main artery of global trade.

On the other hand CEO of Maersk Line Søren Skou expressed his appreciation for the extended cooperation with Egypt through the Suez Canal Authority ( SCA ), especially the development and keeping pace with the latest modern technologies and the continuous development and modernization of the Suez Canal and its infrastructure, which makes Egypt qualified to become the main and pivotal center for supplying Supplying ships with green fuel in the region,

Pointing to the scheme to establish a project to produce clean fuel for ships in Egypt with investments of $15 billion, which will provide more than 100,000 job opportunities in various disciplines

The meeting also discussed ways to enhance cooperation between the Suez Canal Authority and Maersk Group, especially in the field of training, exchange of experiences, maritime transport, logistics, container handling terminals, and marine services.

Its noteworthy  that Maersk and Egyptian authorities have signed a partnership agreement to explore the establishment of large-scale green fuel production in Egypt.

In the presence of the Egyptian Prime Minister, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed in a joint bid to further accelerate the supply of green fuels and the global transformation to net-zero shipping.

Maersk and Egyptian authorities have signed a partnership agreement

This partnership follows six fuel sourcing partnerships announced earlier this month, and with it Maersk joins forces with the General Authority for Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone), the Egyptian New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA), the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC), and the Sovereign Fund of Egypt for Investment and Development (TSFE).

The parties will be conducting a feasibility study before the end of 2022 to examine an Egypt-based hydrogen and green marine fuel production, powered by renewable energy with Maersk as committed offtaker.

Maersk intends to explore similar opportunities in other regions with strong potential for renewable energy development, drawing on business and governmental relations to facilitate opportunities for nations and commercial players to embrace the rapid acceleration in green fuel production that is key to the decarbonisation of shipping
