Italy 14th in the world for global connections of container lines

After the progression recorded in 2020, the score attributed to the Peninsula by Unctad with its Liner Shipping Connectivity Index remains essentially stable

At the end of the second quarter of 2022, Italy was (like the previous one) still in 14th place in the ranking of the most interconnected countries in the world by shipping container lines. This was sanctioned by the Liner Shipping Connectivity Index developed by Unctad – the UN Conference for Trade and Development – which, giving it a score of 75.5, placed it after Vietnam (79.2) and before the United Arab Emirates (75.1).

The index, it should be remembered, made its debut in 2006 and is currently calculated on the basis of six parameters: the number of countries to which the one in question is directly linked, without transshipment; the number of scheduled ships touched each week; the capacity dislocated every year in Teu; the number of regular scheduled services to and from the country; the number of companies that include it in their connections; the average capacity in Teu used by the services that use the largest units.

For a comparison, it should also be considered that 100 points were attributed to China, as the most interconnected country by sea globally, at the time of the start of the surveys in 2006, and that on that occasion Italy had obtained 57.15.

Moving on to look at the general classification, this sees China as always in first position, now with the all-time high of 172.3 points. Subsequent positions also remained unchanged, starting with South Korea (11.2), Singapore (110), Malaysia (99) and the United States (which, with 96.9 points, however recorded a significant loss compared to the previous quarter in which the score was 102.8).

The list of Italy’s partners sees Spain (0.530) at the top, followed by China (0.474), Egypt (0.473), Singapore (0.464) and France (0.455). South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Malta, the United Arab Emirates and Malaysia follow in the Top 10.

In this case, the changes compared to the pre-pandemic are few: in the fourth quarter of 2019, for comparison, the list of the countries most interconnected with Italy by container lines included Spain, France, China, Singapore and Egypt.
