Arabian Ports : Port of Sohar welcomes biggest container vessel

To commemorate the visit by the largest container vessel to ever call at the Port of Sohar, Hutchison Ports Sohar’s management team organised a special celebration including the presentation of a memento to the ship’s master

Hutchison Ports Sohar, the operator of the container terminal at the Port of Sohar, reached another significant milestone with the maiden call of the first 14,000 teu class container vessel berthing at the terminal. Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation’s YM Welcome was welcomed in early August, while YM Wellbeing, a sister ship, also recently called at the terminal.

Despite the pressures of the pandemic, Hutchison Ports Sohar has had a good start to the year. The terminal now has a total of 16 direct services, three of which – Oman Shipping’s India Express Service, THE Alliance’s Asia Gulf Express and a regional service by the Mediterranean Shipping Company – were secured in the first half of 2020. The number of vessel calls in the first six months of the year jumped by 18 per cent, while transshipment volumes and reefer exports have seen a growth of 36 per cent and 24 per cent respectively compared with the equivalent months in 2019.
