ABP Humber marks 20 years of support to the Grimsby and Cleethorpes Sea Cadets

For 20 years ABP Humber has been supporting the Grimsby and Cleethorpes Sea Cadets.

Sea Cadet units across the UK offer young people a whole host of opportunities and experiences that help to grow teamwork, confidence, interests, and skills within a safe and supportive environment both ashore and afloat; their mission is to facilitate young people to become the very best versions of themselves.

The Grimsby and Cleethorpes Sea Cadets, based next to the Grimsby Port Office, offer a host of different water-based and shoreside activities to its young members. From sailing, windsurfing, and powerboating to rock climbing, camping, and paddleboarding, along with others.

The group is run by a number of volunteers who have a range of skills. New volunteers are always welcome to simply lend a hand or become trained instructors. A background in the Royal Navy or in water sports isn’t necessary.

District Chairman at Sea Cadets, Emma Walton, said:

“Grimsby and Cleethorpes Sea Cadets work very closely with ABP and ABP’s support has been immense over the last 20 years. The unit is extremely grateful for the financial support through ABP Humber’s Community Chest Fund.”

“ABP colleagues also hold seats on our Committee, we would like to extend our thanks to our longstanding President Captain Simon Bird and our new Chairman Mr Graham Cudbertson who has recently taken up the post from former Immingham and Grimsby Dock Master, Captain Phillip Christy. We would like to thank ABP Humber for their enduring commitment to our charity.”

ABP Marine Administration Manager, Graham Culbertson, is a former Royal Navy sonar operator and has been with ABP for over 20 years. He has served aboard Royal Navy destroyers HMS York, HMS Manchester, and HMS Gloucester. After progressing through ABP into management, the association between the Sea Cadets and Harbour Authority has allowed Graham to thrive in both roles to ensure that the two offer each other the very best support they can.

The Grimsby and Cleethorpes Sea Cadets recently attended ABP Humber’s Remembrance Day Memorial Service at the Queen’s Steps on the Port of Grimsby. Representatives from the Cadet Unit have attended and participated in the service for many years.

The Last Post was played by Richard Jones to begin a two-minute silence held in honour of those who died protecting the River Humber during the First and Second World Wars. ABP Coxswain Christopher Hughes, and Lieutenant RNR, carried out the service attended by members of the public, relatives of veterans, and ABP colleagues
